Spring Into Renewal

Updated: Feb 19, 2023

Join us

for the first of our four workshops focusing on the seasons. This workshop will focus on our upcoming season, my personal favorite, Spring. I, UnitedYogi Lexi, am honored to be hosting Part 1 of 4!

Why the Seasons?

According to Ayurveda, the traditional Hindu system of medicine, our bodies are extremely in tune with the ways of the planet. "With the change in season, the change is very evident in the environment we live in. We see various changes in bio-life around us, such as flowering in spring and leaf-shedding in autumn in the plants, hibernation of many animals with the coming of winter, and so on. As human being is also part of the same ecology, the body is greatly influenced by external environment" (Mallika KJ).

When people do not know or ignore the suitable types of food stuffs, dressing, and other regimens that the earth encourages us to follow in particular season, this can lead to derangement of homeostasis and causes various diseases. The main theme of this Workshop Series is to encourage us to become more aware concerning the methods to live in alliance with the environment.

Spring

According to Ayurveda, the approximate time of spring is from mid-March to mid-May. This season is considered as season of flowering, birth, and rebirth. As nature moves out of the cold, wet, dark winter toward spring, the pulse of life quickens, the earth warms, and blossoms unfurl, reaching for the sun. Nature makes it look smooth, but for us humans it’s not as easy to transition gracefully from one season to the next—especially from winter to spring. More often we find ourselves feeling heavy and sluggish, like a cranky bear reluctantly coming out of hibernation. The key to feeling in step with the seasons is to harmonize with nature. You may not have a spring festival or an Indian yoga master to guide

you, but by weaving some simple Ayurvedic principles into your life, you can weather this seasonal transition smoothly and emerge feeling transformed and ready to get your springtime groove on.

The Season We're In

Related to mud

To enjoy a healthy spring, you need to understand the kapha dosha and bring it into balance. Of the three doshas—vata, pitta, and kapha—it’s kapha that endows your body with its earthy-watery qualities. It provides lubrication for joints, as well as mucus to protect the sensitive tissues of the sinuses, lungs, and stomach; it also determines the size, strength, and suppleness of your muscles.

How Can We Sprout From the Mud?

In spring, you need to shed this excess kapha or risk becoming vulnerable to seasonal allergies or head colds. You might also gain or retain weight or succumb to a general lethargy or emotional dullness. Your Ayurvedic prescription for spring is to develop a rhythm and routine that helps you gradually lighten up physically, mentally, and emotionally without disturbing the stable virtues of kapha. The best approach is multidimensional and includes eating lighter foods, adding certain herbs to your diet, and practicing asana, pranayama (breathing techniques), meditation, and some form of devotional rituals. This may seem to be rather overwhelming at first, but you can begin to integrate change anywhere you’re most comfortable.

Where Do We Start?

Right where we are! We start by enhancing things we already do and perhaps slowly incorporating whatever best serves you. In our time together we will start moving through a refreshing yoga flow, followed by a renewal guided mediation and journaling. Then you are all invited to a fresh food potluck. You are encouraged to bring a fresh seasonal dish to share with the group. I will set up a beautiful spring table display and we can enjoy a fresh meal in the sunshine. Bonus points if you incorporate seasonal herbs! We will end the event with a magical plant exchange! During this portion of the event we will all display the plants that we have brought with us, draw a number, and each select our favorite plant in order of our number drawn. This is a day full of freshness, liveliness, and community!
